Interactive Blog Game II

OK, so it's not that interactive, and it's not really a game per se, but it is in my blog! And there was enough response to the first one that I'm going to try it again. If it works well this time, maybe I'll even try to give it a name.

For those who missed the first installment, check it out here.

I'll name two; you name the third. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and... ???

(See, this one is more interesting to me. I'm not sure I'll like any answer...but go ahead, because I am anxious to hear your thoughts.)

I've got to go with STP as well; they were the first to pop into my head.

Do I get bonus points because they were on the Simpsons?

No bonus, Lisa...although the answer I happen to prefer has appeared in a Simpsons episode, a classic one.

The problem with Soundgarden is that they never achieved the popular appeal that Pearl Jam and Nirvana had. But it's a good answer, nonetheless.

The problem with STP is that they were not quite as good and were clearly derivative, in my opinion. But I see where you're going with it.

Feel free to disagree or offer another answer. Meanwhile, I'll wait a while to give my best shot at the answer. (Someone may very well beat me to the punch, but that's okay.)

To say that STP is not as good as Nirvana can be a bit problematic. Honestly, Nirvana's musical ability is mediocre at best. However, if you want to judge or raw emotive appeal, Nirvana obviously has that. I mean, Kurt Cobain was emo before emo existed (and might I add, cooler than emo).

To be fair, STP probably is a bit too derivative in this case. If you don't prefer STP as an answer, how about Smashing Pumpkins?

Thanks to T.M. for having the balls to say what, until now, I thought only I had the balls to say.

Nirvana sucks.

I hate bands whose sole appeal is their prepubescent angst that gets passed off as emotion of more than kiddie-pool depth.

I'm in an angry mood this morning.

Nirvana's musical ability is less than some others, but better than many people give them credit for. Certainly it was a travesty that Rolling Stone named Kurt Cobain the 12th greatest guitarist ever.

Nonetheless, their quality is not in sheer musical ability; it is in their ability to have encapsulated the strange reality that many younger Gen-Xers were often simultaneously full of rage and completely dispassionate and aloof.

I think Smashing Pumpkins is the best answer to this one. They are close enough in musical style, had a similar amount of commercial success, and their music was permeated with a similar attitude.

Keep talking if you wish, but look for another question soon.
